“JEN,” JARED SAID BREATHLESSLY, jogging through the snow to catch up with her. “Wait up.”

Jen looked around. The snow was still falling so heavily that it was getting pretty impossible to see clearly for more than a few feet in any direction, but she still could have sworn that nobody was out in the yard when she’d finally emerged from the Dean family’s small barn, after the final caterer had taken their final chafing dish out into the night and their headlights had begun to light up the snow, turning it shining and weird as they backed their cars up and headed slowly down the driveway in the increasingly treacherous snowfall.

How had Jared gotten there? Where had he been lurking?

And why, after all these years, did she still have the urge to greet him with a kiss?

Annoyed with herself, she shook her head, tromping on through the snow as if he hadn’t said anything.

That didn’t stop him from catching up with her. And when he did, even in the darkness, and with the thick flakes swirling around them, she could see the way his hands reached for her, almost instinctively—and the way he checked himself, jamming them deep into the pockets of his unbuttoned parka as he struggled to keep up with her through the drifts, which were now barking their shins.

At least she wasn’t the only one who was having trouble remembering they weren’t together anymore, Jen told herself. And then she wondered—was that really a good thing?

Think about Ed, she told herself, and tried to bring up one of her favorite moments with him: the time he’d shown up at her house with a bag full of fried chicken when she’d had a tough day at work, or the first time he’d kissed her, after they’d been hanging out with friends at the local bar.

But when she tried to bring those memories up, her mind just seemed to fill up with snow like the flakes that were still falling all around them.

“Where are you going?” Jared asked. “Shouldn’t you get some sleep?”

Jen bit back the retort that she’d been remembering to get enough sleep very well for the past several years, thank you very much, without him around to remind her. Instead, she just said, “I’ve got to move the horses.”

“The horses?” Jared said, his voice rising in surprise, which broke quickly into a laugh. “They part of the ceremony?”

“I hope not,” Jen said. “That’s the point. I’ve got to get them out of Dad’s barn over to the Deans’. Dad was going to do it in the morning, but I want to get it done tonight.”

“You want a hand?” Jared asked.

Jen didn’t stop her steady progress through the snow, but she took a mental pause, debating. Of course she wanted a hand. It would be a lot easier getting two horses out of their stalls and situated in their new quarters with two people than one. But did she really want to have to deal with Jared
